Beat the Heat: Energy-Efficient Home Cooling

North Texas summers aren’t for the faint of heart. With triple-digit afternoons, blazing sunshine, and air that feels like a warm blanket, keeping your home cool can feel like a battle — especially if you’re trying to avoid sky-high energy bills. The good news? A few smart strategies can keep you comfortable while cutting costs.

1. Give Your AC Some TLC

Your air conditioner works hardest in the summer, so efficiency is key. Schedule seasonal service to clean coils, check refrigerant levels, and ensure everything is running smoothly. Swapping out your air filter every 1–3 months can improve efficiency by up to 15%.

2. Work With the Wind

A properly set ceiling fan can make a room feel 4–6 degrees cooler. Make sure the blades are spinning counterclockwise so they push cooler air down. This allows you to raise your thermostat without feeling the heat.

3. Shut Out the Sun

By late morning, the Texas sun is intense enough to warm up a room quickly. Close blinds, curtains, or energy-efficient shades on south- and west-facing windows. Reflective film or solar screens can be a game-changer here in Colleyville, where sunny days are the norm.

4. Avoid Indoor Heat Builders

Using the oven or running the dryer during peak heat adds unnecessary warmth to your home. Opt for grilling outside, air-drying laundry, or using the microwave instead.

5. Check for Air Leaks

Cool air can easily escape through tiny cracks around doors and windows. Apply weatherstripping, seal gaps, and check attic insulation to keep the heat out and your AC from overworking.

Bonus Tip – Seal the Attic Access: Even a well-insulated attic can leak heat through the access hatch. Installing an Attic Tent creates an airtight barrier that keeps scorching attic air from seeping into your living space. It’s a small upgrade with a big impact on comfort and efficiency.

6. Switch to LEDs

Old incandescent bulbs give off more heat than light. Swap them for LEDs, and you’ll not only cut down on the heat inside but also reduce your electricity usage.

7. Use Your Thermostat Smarter

Program your thermostat to keep the house a few degrees warmer while you’re away. If you have a smart thermostat, you can adjust settings from your phone and avoid cooling an empty home.

8. Plan for the Long Haul

In North Texas, investing in energy-efficient upgrades pays off year after year. Solar screens, shade trees, reflective roofing, or an upgraded HVAC can make future summers much more bearable.

Local Tip: If your attic feels like a furnace (and in Texas, it often does), combining a radiant barrier with an Attic Tent is one of the fastest ways to reduce indoor heat gain in our region.

Bottom line: With a few changes, you can work with our Texas climate instead of against it, keeping your home cool, your energy bills low, and your summer more enjoyable.
