When can you walk Historic Main Street in December without the season's biggest crowds? Look at the dates Main Street is open to cars, not the event calendar.
From November 22 through December 28, Grapevine closes Main Street to vehicles between Northwest Highway and Dallas Road in four long blocks of time, plus one extra evening. Those closures add up to roughly 24 of the season's 36 days. The 12 or so days left over come in three short weekday stretches. On those days the Christmas Market is open, the new Gazebo tree is lit, and Main Street works like a normal street again. For anyone who lives ten minutes away, those stretches are the best part of the Christmas Capital of Texas season.
The Calendar Behind the Calendar
The Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau's 2026 writer's reference guide is dated October 16 and lists its information as of October 15. It gives the closures down to the hour.
| Closure window | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Sun., Nov. 22, 1 p.m. to Mon., Nov. 30, 6 a.m. | 38th Annual Carol of Lights and Thanksgiving week |
| Thu., Dec. 3, 6 p.m. to Mon., Dec. 7, 6 a.m. | 47th Annual Parade of Lights weekend |
| Mon., Dec. 7, 6 p.m. to midnight | Merry & Bright Drone Show |
| Fri., Dec. 11, 6 a.m. to Mon., Dec. 14, 6 a.m. | Mid-December weekend |
| Fri., Dec. 18, 6 a.m. to Mon., Dec. 28, 6 a.m. | Christmas week |
The CVB's parking and transportation page gives four broader date ranges with no hours and folds the drone show into the parade range, so the guide is the more precise reference. The guide also says all dates, times and prices may change, so check again the week you go.
The weekends tell you the most. Every weekend from Thanksgiving through Christmas falls inside a closure, including December 5 and 6, which sit inside the Parade of Lights window. In 2026, every holiday weekend downtown is a closed-street weekend.
Three Windows When Main Street Is Just Main Street
What's left over falls on weekdays, and each window has its own quirks.
- Monday, Nov. 30, through Thursday, Dec. 3, until 6 p.m. Thanksgiving week is over, the Grapevine Christmas Market is already open, and the parade crowds haven't arrived yet. The market runs 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily from November 27 to December 30, closing only December 24 and 25. It's in the Cotton Belt Railroad Historic District at 705 S. Main St., and you don't need a train ticket to walk through.
- Monday, Dec. 7, until 6 p.m., then Tuesday, Dec. 8, through Thursday, Dec. 10. The street reopens at 6 a.m. Monday, closes again for the drone show that evening, and then stays open for three straight days. One catch: on December 8 the holiday shuttle runs only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., so plan to drive and park yourself that evening.
- Monday, Dec. 14, through Thursday, Dec. 17. This is the last open stretch before Christmas week closes the street for ten days. If you want to see the decorations at their fullest without the Christmas-week crowds, these four days are your best bet.
The new feature to see during any of these windows is at the Town Square Gazebo. The CVB says it has a brand-new tree for 2026, with a drum and a working train inside. You'll get a much better look at it on a Tuesday than on a parade night.
December 3 Changes the Usual Plan
Parade night works differently. The 47th Annual Parade of Lights starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, with the theme "Christmas Miracle on Main Street." Main Street closes to cars at 6 p.m. that evening. Two things you might count on won't be there.
First, there's no Grapevine departure of Santa's North Pole Express that day. Grapevine Vintage Railroad runs its December 3 trips out of the Historic Stockyards Station in Fort Worth instead, with departures at 1:30, 3, 4:30, 6 and 7:30 p.m. Second, the free Christmas Capital of Texas shuttle doesn't run on December 3.
So on parade night you'll need your own way in. That means a free lot within walking distance, the paid garage, or the train, all covered below. Families who want both the train and the parade in one day would need tickets for the Fort Worth departures. Otherwise the train is better saved for another day between November 27 and December 30. It runs every day in that span except December 3, 24 and 25.
What Changed From 2025
Three schedule changes this year move the quiet stretches around.
The Christmas Market no longer opens on Carol of Lights night. In 2025, according to Community Impact, the market opened alongside Carol of Lights on November 24 and then ran daily starting November 28. In 2026, Carol of Lights runs from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 23, and the market opens Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. If you want to shop the market without the kickoff crowd, that's now built into the schedule.
The drone show also shrank to one night. Community Impact reported two 2025 shows, on December 1 and December 8. The sixth Merry & Bright Drone Show is a single 7 p.m. show on Monday, December 7. With one show instead of two, there's only one evening closure for it, and the December 8 to 10 stretch stays open.
The parade moved one day earlier, from Thursday, December 4, in 2025 to Thursday, December 3, this year. If you're working from last year's dates, that's the change most likely to trip you up.
Where the Closed Days Still Work
On closed days, the easiest outings move away from the curb. Several of the season's draws are away from Main Street or work fine with the street closed.
- ice! featuring Harry Potter at Gaylord Texan runs November 13, 2026, through January 3, 2027, as part of the resort's Christmas season.
- Peace Plaza Ice Rink is open November 21 through January 5, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The CVB lists $20 for a one-hour session with skate rental.
- Christmas at Dig World is new for 2026. It runs December 18 through 24 at 2200 W. Grapevine Mills Circle, with holiday decorations, heavy-equipment play and Construction Santa. Day passes start at $30. It falls during Christmas week, when Main Street is closed, and our Grapevine Mills entrance guide covers how Dig World fits around the mall.
- Great Wolf Lodge's Snowland is listed November 23 through January 5.
- RTown Gallery's Custom Candle Pop Up is also new this year. It runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 13, at 314 S. Main St., and the gallery is free to enter. It falls inside the December 11 to 14 closure, so you'll walk in, not park out front.
For dinner on one of the open weeknights, two newer spots are on or near Main. Bon Bon Caffè opened May 15 at 603 S. Main St., a short walk from the Christmas Market, with pasta and tapas on the menu, as Community Impact reported. The CVB's listing adds panini, pinsa al taglio, espresso drinks and a cocktail program. Farther south, Little Dutch opened October 26 at 1285 S. Main St. with Italian and other regional dishes, as Community Impact reported. It's far enough from the center of the festivities that it's an easy stop on any night of the season.
Getting In When the Street Is Closed
On closed days, plan around parking and transit first.
- Library lot and shuttle. The CVB names the Grapevine Public Library at 1201 Municipal Way as the best place to park for the free shuttle loop. The shuttle runs November 27 through December 30, generally from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. There's no service December 3, 24 or 25, and service starts at 1 p.m. on December 26. It stops at Grapevine Main Station and the Palace Theatre off Barton Street.
- Free close-in parking. The guide lists free parking at 636 S. Main St. and limited free spaces in the Historic Grapevine lots.
- Main Parking Garage at 255 E. Dallas Road. The CVB parking page lists the first 90 minutes as free, then $1 for each additional hour. That works well for a short market visit.
- TEXRail. You can park at the DFW Airport North Station lot at 1867 E. Dallas Road and ride to Grapevine/Main Street Station. Trinity Metro Day Passes are 25% off in the GoPass app with codes CCOT26A for adults and CCOT26R for eligible reduced fares. The codes are good November 22, 2026, through January 3, 2027, up to four times per account. On parade night, with no shuttle running, this is the simplest option.
If the North Pole Express is on your list, tickets went on sale October 1. They're sold by the two-person bench at $45 to $50 per person depending on date and time, and lap-rider tickets for children under two are $6, according to a North Texas e-News notice. The CVB warns that tickets from third-party sellers may be fraudulent or invalid, so buy only through its official North Pole Express page or Ticketline. Booking a train on one of the open weekdays, like December 1 or December 15, lets you finish with dinner on Main Street while it's open to cars.
